The star attraction for kids is the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway, a vintage train ride through the mountains departing right from downtown. Before or after, wander Main Street for candy shops, toy stores, and ice cream. Works best as a relaxed all-day outing.

Kids can pan for real gold and take an underground tour at Consolidated Gold Mine, in the town where America's first major gold rush kicked off. The historic square is easy to stroll with young ones, with sweet shops and a laid-back mountain-town feel.

Daytime brings fall rides, shows and pumpkin-themed play; after dark the park lights up with thousands of jack-o'-lanterns and glowing dinosaurs. It's a ticketed all-day outing on select dates through Nov 1, so check the calendar before you drive out. Bring a wagon for tired legs and plan the nighttime trail around bedtime.
